VLOG #5: Animatic

Thursday, May 13, 2010 , Posted by Rubber Onion at 1:00 AM

So far we've done the story, we've drawn up boards, we've recorded dialog... now we start applying some visual timing to it all with the Animatic! The Animatic stage is pretty funky if only because it starts to feel like you're animating... but you're not. I will revisit an Animatic sometimes dozens of times in the next couple stages before I get to actually animating just to get things tightened up just right.

I say about 1/2 in that I had "computer issues"... that's a bit of an understatement! I'm sure that has happened to us all and it's incredibly frustrating. I would recommend that if you can't fix a problem within 2 hours, make the rest of the day dedicated to JUST solving that issue and when it's fixed just call it a day... if you try to work any more past that it'll just lead to more frustration; in times like those you really need "a win" so just learn when to walk away.

  1. Nice video, worth the wait. What's your FPS? I always forget when to use 24, 30 and 29.97 or whatever it is. My cartoon I'm finishing up is made for a DVD so I used 30 FPS and it seems to play pretty well when I did a test. My next few cartoons I think are going to be strictly web-only so I'll probably do 24 FPS. Plus then you get into dimensions for TV, computer, DVD, etc. I just wanted to make goofy cartoons, not do math hahaha.

Just curious, will you be providing the complete animatic for readers to watch?

  1. Stop shouting Stevo! lol! just kidding bro. Good stuff! Am glad to get a peek into how the flash works and all the small intricate designs that give animation effects. Great stuff!
